PROVIDENCE – The Social Enterprise Greenhouse has begun accepting applications for its next incubator and accelerator sessions for early stage social enterprise entrepreneurs looking to combine a traditional business with the public problem-solving goals of a charitable or social-service organization.

The 15-week incubator program targets individuals and organizations with an idea for a social enterprise venture and provides services such as business planning tools, mentoring, workshops and technical assistance. Individuals interested in learning how to run a “micro-business,” especially those facing barriers to traditional employment, are also eligible to apply.

The next SE Greenhouse incubator session will begin in September, and those interested can learn more and apply online at segreenhouse.org.

For motivated social entrepreneurs in New England who have already completed the incubator program or another academic entrepreneurship or business program, SE Greenhouse offers a more intensive accelerator program that runs for 12 weeks and helps participants begin implementing their social enterprise plans.

During the accelerator, entrepreneurs attend six intensive half-day workshops or mentoring sessions covering topics such as organizational effectiveness, social enterprise planning, strategic marketing, sustainable business models, social enterprise finances and presentation skills.

The accelerator session will launch again in January, and those interested in applying can do so by clicking here.

The announcement of new incubator and accelerator sessions follows the hiring of several new staff members at SE Greenhouse, who are on loan to the nonprofit group through the AmeriCorps Volunteers In Service To America program. AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer Emily Wanderer has assumed the responsibility of managing the Social Enterprise Greenhouse incubator and accelerator programs.

Since going independent in 2008, the incubator for “socially conscious” businesses has transformed into a more competitive enterprise and has grown the number of companies under its programs from 10 to 150 since 2010. As of June, 42 ventures had gone through the SE Greenhouse accelerator, with 33 still operational and employing about 200 people.
