STEM day camps for children available at Bryant

SMITHFIELD – Bryant University is hosting a week-long STEM Day Camp this summer for boys and girls to engage in team-based, hands-on science, technology, engineering and math experiments.
The camp is for children entering grades 3 to 5; experiments will be supervised by qualified STEM professionals, according to information about the camp. Sponsored by Learning for Life, STEM Day Camp RI will be held July 6 through 17. Cost is $350 per child and hours of the camp are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A maximum of 100 children can participate.
The camp aims to encourage interest in STEM fields at an early age by introducing fun and new ways to apply STEM in everyday lives.
“Educating our youth in science, technology, engineering and math has never been more important,” Marc Cardin, director of STEM Day Camp RI, said in a statement. “At this age, students have a significant amount of natural curiosity, and it is critical that we show them these subjects are interesting and fun.”
Each day features different activities that emphasize goal setting, problem solving and teamwork.
STEM jobs are on the rise in the United States. The nation’s science and technology workforce is expected to grow to more than 8.6 million by 2018, which is approximately a 15 percent growth from 2012.
When including those self-employed in STEM fields, the projected number soars to 15.7 million. The estimated shortage is as many as 3 million people in high-skilled STEM jobs by 2018.
