NEWPORT – Salas’ Dining Room on Thames Street has been sold for $2 million to a Baltimore developer who plans to renovate the space and reopen a restaurant there, Gustave White Sotheby’s International Realty announced.

Opened by Francisco and Maria Salas as a bar in 1952 and then converted to a restaurant in 1963, Salas’ Dining Room was one of the longest-running family restaurants in Newport. The eatery closed in January when the two sons of the founders running the establishment decided to pursue other interests, a news release announcing the sale said.

The sale includes the building, the liquor license, equipment and restaurant memorabilia.

After renovating the restaurant, the buyer, Larry Silverstein, plans to reopen the restaurant in a partnership with local restaurateur Patrick Kilroy.

The sale was brokered by Realtor Jose Aguon of Gustave White Sotheby’s.
