NEWPORT - A grant from the R.I. Council for the Humanities (RICH) to the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy at Salve Regina University will fund “a project to examine and celebrate the use of storytelling in public affairs.”

The center announced the grant on Wednesday, though details of the grant amount were not released.

Announced on Monday by RICH, the grant will fund the co-director G. Wayne Miller’s “Story in the Public Square.” Miller is a visiting fellow and Providence Journal reporter.

The Pell Center concurrently announced the project’s first public conference on April 12, and will include panel discussions as well as the screening of the Providence Journal war story documentary “Coming Home.”

“We’ve worked for nearly a year with our partners to organize a public program...that will both celebrate ethical storytelling and expose abuses,” said James M. Ludes, executive director at the Pell Center in prepared remarks. “RICH’s support is a difference-maker for us,” he added.

“Story in the Public Square,” or @pubstory on Twitter, is an initiative focused on the discussion of the role of public storytelling and dialogue. “What is a story in the public square? Think Upton Sinclair and ‘The Jungle,’” the program tweeted on Dec. 7.

The Pell Center is Salve Regina University’s policy research and public information center, which dedicates its services (and namesake) to the political legacy the late Sen. Claiborne Pell, the mastermind behind the federal Pell college grant program.
