Schilling to launch Amalur Tuesday

BOSTON – Curt Schilling, former Red Sox pitcher and founder of 38 Studios LLC, will be in Bellingham, Mass., on Feb. 7 as the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning goes on sale, The Boston Globe reported.

The game, published by Electronic Arts, is a fantasy role-playing game. A demo was released mid-January but was “riddled with software bugs,” the newspaper reported, noting that Schilling apologized in an online forum popular with serious gamers.

“It is way way WAYYYYY more buggy than anything ANYONE should ever release, much less a demo,” Schilling wrote.

The Boston Globe said 38 Studios now employs 300 in Providence, short of the 450 it has promised to bring to Rhode Island in exchange for the R.I. Economic Development Corporation’s $75 million loan guarantee. According to the EDC, the last “certified” number of employees for 38 Studios was 270, as of Nov. 1. The video game developer must meet the 450 target by Nov. 1, 2013, said an EDC spokeswoman.

The Globe also reported that Schilling has invested about $30 million in the company, which is in addition to the proceeds realized from the guaranteed loans.
