Scrabble Ball raises $1.1M for hospital

PROVIDENCE – With a view of the Scrabble game board and other décor as a backdrop, more than 900 guests on March 7 attended the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Scrabble Ball, which raised $1.1 million for the hospital.
The hospital’s largest annual fundraiser will provide funding for patient care, life-saving programs, research and education at Hasbro.
Dr. Timothy J. Babineau, president and CEO of Lifespan, and Margaret M. Van Bree, president of Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital, addressed the crowd after a cocktail reception.
“Thanks to an incredibly generous community, and everyone at the Scrabble Ball, Hasbro Children’s Hospital is home to the latest breakthroughs in technology, cutting-edge research, and more importantly, an unparalleled team of compassionate caregivers,” said Van Bree. “It is because of this support that we are able to improve the well-being of children, helping to provide them with the healthy future every child deserves.”
Edward “Ned” O. Handy, president and chief operating officer of The Washington Trust Company and his wife, Polly, chaired the event.
Also featured was a video of 8-year old Jeannette Finch, who has received care at Hasbro Children’s Hospital for a condition known as brittle bone disease.
Brian and Meg Lacasse, parents to son Colin, also detailed the extensive treatment Colin received in a 33-day hospital stay at birth to treat meconium aspiration and lack of oxygen. The treatment is credited with saving his life, they said.
Some of the funds raised will support renovations to the hospital’s family room in the pediatric intensive care unit.
Guests also enjoyed a live auction and performance by The Spinners and danced to the music mixes of DJ Twalle until midnight.
Besides title sponsor Hasbro, Inc., 69 other sponsors contributed to the event, including presenting sponsors Alex and Ani Charity by Design and CVS Health; signature sponsors GTECH, Toys “R” Us and The Washington Trust Co.; and gold sponsors KPMG LLP; Swarovski and Tufts Health Plan.
Hasbro Children’s Hospital is a part of the Lifespan health care system. A private, not-for-profit institution, it is the pediatric division of Rhode Island Hospital, which in turn is the principal teaching hospital of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
