MIDDLETOWN - Systems and engineering services supplier Sea Corp was awarded a $1 million Phase II Advanced Development Small Business Innovative Research grant for missile launch technology advanced research, the company announced Friday.

Veteran-owned Sea Corp, which has provided navy services for more than 30 years, plans to use the funds to further explore the potential for the air-bag inflator technology.

Sea Corp’s patented technology for launching payloads using commercial automotive air-bag inflators was first developed more than 15 years ago. The innovative technology has been used to launch payloads ranging from small surveillance droves to 750 pound torpedoes.

The project, issued by the Navy’s Special Projects Office, calls for Sea Corp. to build and test a 1/5 scale model ejector system and conduct submerged launch testing of a missile shape from a lake test facility.

The company will work with Northrop-Grumman as a subcontractor.

In its history, Sea Corp. has been awarded 15 Phase I SBIR projects, six of which have been awarded contracts for advanced development in the form of SBIR Phase II grants. Two of Sea Corp.’s projects have advanced to Phase III commercialization and were selected as Navy SBIR success stories.
