PROVIDENCE – Serve Rhode Island is recruiting volunteers to help shovel out elderly and disabled residents when major storms hit this winter.

The nonprofit successfully recruited 35 volunteers to help 66 residents in dealing with a Jan. 3 snowstorm, which covered Rhode Island with between 6 and 10 inches of snow.

Volunteers helped elderly and disabled residents by shoveling or plowing out driveways, walkways and stairs. Several volunteers worked through the entire weekend, including William Volpe of Central Falls, Mike Norklun and his daughter of Cranston, Naomi Kramer of Providence

and Mark Stoutzenberg also of Cranston, aiding as many as seven different residents each during

the entire weekend.

Vicky White, program director for the East Bay Community Action Program AmeriCorps program and her team of AmeriCorps members were also out in full force on Saturday, assisting five residents in Warwick.

“We know that there will always be a need to help out elderly and disabled residents during snowstorms,” said Serve Rhode Island Executive Director Bernie Beaudreau. “We want to have a base of volunteers who will be ready to assist when another major storm hits.”
