PROVIDENCE – Statewide exercise program Shape Up RI has announced its eight-week, 2012 summer exercise challenge.

Participants will compete in four categories - pedometer steps, weight loss, exercise minutes and fruit and vegetable consumption.

“Summer is an ideal time to focus on physical activity and nutrition,” Shape Up RI chairman and founder Dr. Rajiv Kumar said in prepared remarks.

“We are encouraging Rhode Islanders to sign up and get healthy this season by spending time in our beautiful state parks and bike paths, and by visiting local farmers markets,” added Kumar.

The summer challenge is similar to the annual 12-week spring competition, but includes new Web features such as weekly bonus challenges to keep participants engaged.

Now in its seventh year, more than 70,000 Rhode Islanders have participated in a Shape Up RI program, according to a release.

Registration for the 8-week summer competition begins on May 28. The competition will run from June 25 to August 19.
