PROVIDENCE – Washington County residents get the most “bang for their buck” when it comes to what they pay in property taxes, according to a recent study by SmartAsset.
The financial technology company said Washington County, with its second-lowest property tax rate of 1.33 percent, topped the list due to its good school rating of 8 – schools in the county were ranked on a 10-point scale, 10 being the best – and its low number of violent and property crimes per 100,000 residents – 1,443, the lowest among the five Rhode Island counties.
Providence County ranked last, for its property tax rate of 1.74 percent, low school rating of 1, and the highest number of crimes per 100,000 people at 3,140.
Newport County had the lowest property tax rate at 1.22 percent; its school rating was 6, and property and violent crimes per 100,000 people totaled 2,443. Newport County was in the middle of the list, between second place Bristol County and fourth place Kent County.

Tippah, Miss., led the nation for having the greatest property tax value, as the property tax rate there is only 0.66 percent, schools received a 7 rating and violent and property crimes per 100,000 people numbered 23.

Standings were created by calculating a tax value using a ratio of the “community score” calculated from school and crime numbers, and the per capita property tax paid, SmartAsset said.
