NORTH PROVIDENCE – Donald’s Populist Punch trumped Hillary’s Liberal Limeade in Yacht Club Bottling Works’ “Soda Pop Poll,” according to results released Tuesday, Election Day.
The 101-year-old soda company, which announced the poll in August, said the punch edged the limeade by a “very close margin,” 22,224 votes, or 46.3 percent, to 21,360, or 44.5 percent.

A later addition to the political pop contest, Gary’s Sassy Sarsaparilla, inspired by third-party candidate, Libertarian Gary Johnson, came in a distant third, with 4,464 votes, or 9.2 percent.

And, in just a few hours, the nation will know if the tastes of the soda pop pollsters were prescient.

“New Englanders love the flavor of Donald’s Populist Punch best,” John Sgambato, owner of Yacht Club Bottling Works, said. “Thank you to everyone who purchased the Soda Pop Poll sodas. I hope it was a fun way to make it through this election year. We really appreciate your support and look forward to creating more political pops in the future.”

The limited edition labels, designed by Rhode Island cartoonist Frankie Galasso, featured caricatures of the 2016 presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton and Donald J. Trump, with their respective donkey and elephant mascots. The colors also reflected their political parties – the punch is red, as Trump is a Republican, and the limeade, blue, as Clinton is a Democrat.

A total of 48,048 bottles of Yacht Club Soda were sold in the Soda Pop Poll, and remain available until sold out. They are available at the company store at 2239 Mineral Spring Ave., at select stores throughout southeastern New England and at farmers markets.
