Sojourner House expanding services to support sexual assault victims

PROVIDENCE – Sojourner House, a comprehensive domestic violence agency primarily serving clients in Providence and northern Rhode Island, has enlarged its mission to include victims and survivors of sexual assault.

“For years we have recognized that many of the domestic violence survivors we serve also have a history of sexual abuse or have experienced sexual assault,” Vanessa Volz, Sojourner House’s executive director, said in a statement. “Our updated mission seeks to better address our clients’ needs and send the message to victims and survivors that we can and will support you.”

Sojourner House reported that its new mission is “to promote healthy relationships by providing culturally sensitive support, advocacy, and education for victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence and to effect systems change.”

Sojourner House, a member of the RI Coalition Against Domestic Violence, is also developing new programs, including permanent supportive housing for families impacted by violence. Later this fall, the agency will open the state’s first shelter for victims of human trafficking. Through expanded bilingual and culturally sensitive services, Sojourner House expects to provide services to more people impacted by domestic violence or sexual assault. As a result, previously underserved victims and survivors, Sojourner House reported, will have better access to a comprehensive continuum of services, including housing, free HIV testing and bilingual advocacy
