Sojourner, Smith Hill partner on housing

Smith Hill Community Development Corp. has partnered with Sojourner House and Rhode Island Housing to develop a supportive housing complex for victims of domestic violence.
Smith Hill CDC will own and maintain the building, while Sojourner House will provide programs and supportive case management to families living there. The project was unveiled last month.
One in five women and one in seven men have experienced severe physical violence with an intimate partner during their lifetime, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. In 2011, there were more than 7,900 reports of domestic violence in Rhode Island, 5,450 of which resulted in arrests.
The abandoned building was purchased from Rhode Island Housing for $35,000 (plus closing costs). Smith Hill CDC will begin construction in November and it expects to make the property move-in ready by summer 2015, according to Jean Lamb, acting assistant director at Smith Hill CDC. The address cannot be disclosed for safety and security reasons.
Additional support came from Rhode Island Housing HOME funds, which provided $235,000 for the project; $150,000 was provided by Building Homes Rhode Island.
