South Coast Chamber name could return

NEW BEDFORD – Ten years ago an attempt to merge the New Bedford and Fall River chambers of commerce failed, but one of them is considering resurrecting the brand of the South Coast Chamber of Commerce, The Herald News reported.

Rick Kidder, president and CEO of the New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce, reserved the business name South Coast Chamber of Commerce with the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on Sept. 26, according to state records. The reservation expires Nov. 25.

“The Chamber has had the name registered with the state since 2006 but only recently discovered that the registration had lapsed. Staff subsequently re-registered the name,” Kidder said in an email to The Herald News.

Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce & Industry Inc. President and CEO Robert Mellion said it would be “disingenuous” for one chamber to represent the South Coast region. •
