South County Health oncology nurse navigator named 2016 Oncology Nurse of the Year

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The Oncology Nursing Society’s Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts chapter named Leah Arsenault, oncology nurse navigator at South County Health, the 2016 Oncology Nurse of the Year. She received the award in March at the Crowne Plaza Providence-Warwick.

The Oncology Nurse of the Year award is presented annually to recognize an oncology nurse who shows the highest level of nursing excellence along with compassion and skill to care for cancer patients and their families. Arsenault has been a member of the local chapter for more than 10 years, and is a former president.

Arsenault serves as South County Health’s oncology nurse navigator, guiding patients from diagnosis through treatment. She acts as a source of knowledge and support for patients and their families. Arsenault is chemotherapy/biotherapy certified and has received a national certification in oncology nursing. She is also an end-of-life education consortium teacher.

“Being an oncology nurse navigator means I’m a continuous point of contact and support for cancer patients and their caregivers,” Arsenault said in a statement. “It includes patient education, advocacy, care coordination and system navigation. My goal is to improve the cancer care experience for each of my patients.”
