South County, Miriam hospitals receive A grades in Leapfrog report

PROVIDENCE – South County Hospital and The Miriam Hospital each received A grades on the Leapfrog Group’s spring hospital safety score report card.
The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization, released hospital safety scores for more than 2,500 hospitals in the country based on their ability to prevent errors, injuries, accidents and infections; eight Rhode Island hospitals are included on the list.
Receiving B grades were Newport Hospital, Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island, Rhode Island Hospital and Kent County Memorial Hospital, while Roger Williams Medical Center and St. Joseph Health Services of Rhode Island received C grades.
Overall, Rhode Island ranked 30th on the list of all states (with the exception of Maryland, which did not provide data), and the District of Columbia. Rankings were based on the percentage of A scores; Rhode Island’s percentage was 25.
“At a time when more than 1,000 people die every day from preventable accidents in hospitals, Leapfrog believes that patient safety should be Job #1 in every hospital, 24-7. To reinforce that goal of consistent vigilance, we’ve made it easier for patients and others to evaluate a hospital’s previous safety record on the Hospital Safety Score website,” Leah Binder, Leapfrog president and CEO, said in a statement. “While patients should always reference a hospital’s current grade as the most important indicator of hospital safety, patients may also want to consider the hospital’s past record, to assess whether their hospital is making constant improvements or if the hospital has demonstrated consistent excellence.”
Maine claimed the No. 1 spot for the state with the highest percentage of A hospitals for the third consecutive time, with 61 percent of its 18 scored hospitals receiving an A. Massachusetts ranked second for 52 percent of its 62 graded hospitals receiving A grades. Leapfrog produces the report every spring and fall.
In southeastern Massachusetts, Morton Hospital in Taunton and Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River received A grades, while St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford and Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River received B grades.
