SouthCoast Health 8th best in U.S. for emergency heart attack care

FALL RIVER – Southcoast Health System ranks eighth in the nation in BetterDoctor’s Best Hospitals for Emergency Heart Attack Care.
It was the only New England hospital group to land on the independent consumer health website’s list of the top 26 hospitals for heart attack care.
The only New England hospital to land on the list of the lowest-scoring hospitals for heart attack care was Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London, Conn.
Southcoast Health, in a statement, credited its low mortality and readmission rates of heart attack patients as well as consistent use of best practices and standardized protocols for heart attack care for its ranking.

“This is an exciting recognition for the Southcoast Health Cardiovascular Care Center,” Dr. Margaret Ferrell, physician in chief of cardiovascular services at Southcoast Health, said in a statement. “We have a fantastic team of physicians, nurses and clinical staff who are dedicated to providing the highest level of cardiac care to our patients 24/7. It’s gratifying to see their achievements, as well as our institutional commitment to cardiovascular care, being recognized on a national level.”

BetterDoctor used Medicare data to compare hospital quality indicators across six categories: aspirin at arrival, time to an electrocardiogram, how many patients receive primary interventions within 90 minutes of arrival (like angioplasties, stenting or atherectomies), door-to-diagnostic evaluation time, 30-day mortality rate from heart attacks and 30-day readmission rate for heart attack patients.
Southcoast Health includes three hospitals — Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford and Tobey Hospital in Wareham.
