NEW BEDFORD – Southcoast Health is laying off 95 employees throughout the system.
Keith A. Hovan, president and CEO of Southcoast Health, wrote in a letter to employees on March 30 that the affected employees will be placed into other positions within the Southcoast system where possible, and severance packages will be given.
Hovan cited “unanticipated financial challenges during our first two quarters” as the reason for the layoffs. He said the challenges are a result of higher than budgeted operating expenses, largely a result of the company’s implementation of Epic, a new electronic health record system.
Revenue grew 4 percent during the two quarters, but expenses increased 6 percent at the same time, he wrote.
