NEWPORT – Construction of a $21 million expansion and renovation of St. Clare-Newport has begun. The project will expand the skilled nursing facility from 47 to 60 beds, with all private rooms and bathrooms arranged in a “household” model for care.
The location is the existing 1.6-acre site on Spring Street. The new building and an underground parking garage will be placed on the west side of the property. The existing skilled nursing facility will be renovated. The stone chapel and convent, built in 1916, will become the centerpiece of the new facility, according to a description of the project published on the St. Clare-Newport website.
The proposed “household” or “small house” model is a departure from traditional design of skilled nursing homes and assisted living facilities, “altering size, design and organization to create a warm and welcoming community.” The project will feature private rooms and baths arranged around a central living room, kitchen and restaurant-style dining room and lounge, overlooking the harbor.
In addition to the skilled nursing bed expansion, 40 apartments of assisted and independent living will be available, as will an adult day health program. The grounds will be professionally landscaped, to include walking paths and therapeutic gardens designed by a landscape architect with experience in design for geriatric populations.
