PROVIDENCE – The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has released star ratings for home health agencies in Rhode Island that it lists on its website.
“The star ratings will be an additional tool to support consumers’ health care decision-making,” a press release about the star ratings reads.
In addition to helping consumers, the agency said the ratings will help agencies identify areas of improvement.
Agencies are rated based on nine measures, including timeliness of care, patient education on medications and how much patients have improved in getting out of bed, bathing and with their pain.

“Adding star ratings to Home Health Compare is another step forward in our continuing efforts to empower consumers by providing more information to help them make health care decisions, while also encouraging providers to strive for higher levels of quality,” Dr. Patrick Conway, acting principal deputy administrator for CMS and deputy administrator for innovation and quality, said in a statement.
Measures are calculated using information from patient assessments performed by the home health agency and from Medicare claims submitted by the home health agency. Ratings will be updated quarterly as more recent data becomes available.
