Stat/Southcoast EMS selected as ambulance provider for Volvo Ocean Race stop in Newport

DARTMOUTH – Stat/Southcoast EMS has been selected as the ambulance provider for the Volvo Ocean Race when the competition reaches Newport next month.
Stat/Southcoast will provide multiple ambulances, along with paramedics and EMTs for coverage, when race contestants are docked at the pier off Fort Adams State Park.
“It is quite an honor for us to have been selected to provide service for such a prestigious event,” Carol Mansfield, CEO of Stat/Southcoast EMS, said in a statement.
The Volvo Ocean Race, a 39,000-nautical mile worldwide sailing race, will reach Newport May 5-17. Newport is the only North American stopover before teams will sail across the Atlantic for the final legs around Europe.
During the stopover, activities including sailing clinics are scheduled. Spectators will be able to view race boats up close. There also will be entertainment and interactive exhibits for all ages.
Meanwhile, Team Alvimedica, led by Bristol’s Charlie Enright, rounded Cape Horn first on Monday, 15 minutes ahead of Abu Dhabi Racing.
“It’s the Everest of the race; it’s a personal proving ground, so this is pretty special for us,” Enright told Volvo Ocean Race headquarters. “The team has been absolutely amazing – I don’t think anyone would have picked us to get here first.”
There are six teams competing in the race, which began in Alicante in Spain on Oct. 4 and will end in Gothenburg, Sweden, on June 27. The Dongfeng Race Team broke its mast on Monday, but is attempting to continue on, according to volvooceanrace.com.
