Stat/Southcoast’s Mansfield reflects on expansion

PBN: What originally interested you in this industry?

MANSFIELD: I have always had a fascination with ambulances and emergency medical care, and an experience that hit close to home led me in this direction. In 1985, my mother suffered a cardiac arrest. In those days, it was more common to have on-call EMTs rather than a fully staffed team of paramedics. When I called 911 to report my mother’s situation, the ambulance showed up with only a police officer and first responder. I grabbed the ambu-bag and followed instructions, and after that, I knew what I wanted to do with my life. Being the first female owner of an ambulance service in a male-dominated industry really wasn’t as big a hurdle to jump as I thought it might be.

PBN: Now you oversee five locations and have recently doubled the size of your company. What does it feels like to see your business grow?

MANSFIELD: Stat/SouthCoast has grown faster than I ever anticipated, which I am grateful for. And each time we experience another growth spurt, it’s genuinely exciting. It’s not just the rapid growth, but the fact that we have accomplished my main objective – making the patient our main focus – that I feel really good about. I am very proud of the quality, compassionate care my EMTs and paramedics deliver.

PBN: You recently oversaw the launch of Stat Emergency Medical Training. Can you tell us a little bit about that?

MANSFIELD: As we expand and grow, we will need to hire more EMTs and paramedics. We have sometimes found it difficult to hire people who meet our exacting standards. To address this, I sat down with my team, and decided that it was the right time to open Stat Emergency Medical Training. With the experience [our paramedics] have from working in the field, they have a keen ability to both teach to state standards and train for real life. … We now have the ability to hire the best of the best and, more importantly, people that already are trained at our standards. •
