State Council announces $785K in 2013-14 grants

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. State Council on the Arts last week announced the first round of grant awards for the 2013-2014 season, which it hopes will help keep “thousands of artists” employed in the coming year.
According to a news release, the grants are funded through an appropriation from Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee and the General Assembly as well as with federal funds from the National Endowment for the Arts. The council awarded a total of $785,739 to 143 nonprofit organizations, schools and individuals for art and arts programming across Rhode Island. It received 294 applications for the funding.
The largest of the grants went to Trinity Repertory Company – recently named “state theater” for Rhode Island – for operating support. The smallest were $500 grants for several small community-based projects throughout the state.
Other grants include:
• $40,000 to 17 individual artists.
• $25,500 to 23 nonprofit organizations for support of projects, including the Olneyville Fall Festival.
• 40,000 to 18 schools and nonprofit organizations for arts education programs.
• $608,239 to 60 major arts and cultural organizations across Rhode Island. •
