Steel Yard artists install fence at skating center

Posted 12/21/12

PROVIDENCE – A quintet of Steel Yard artists are installing a 385-foot sculptural interactive fence around the Bank of America Skating Center in Kennedy Plaza downtown as the final installment of the National Endowment for the Arts $200,000 Our Town grant that was awarded to the City of Providence, Department of Art, Culture and Tourism, FirstWorks, the Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy and 15 arts and community partners earlier this year.

The fence was designed and fabricated by local artists Liz Potenza, April Franklin, Jackson Morley, Frank Barada, and Tim Ferland beginning in November and installation began Dec. 12.

More than 90 percent of the project budget stayed with regional suppliers, vendors, contractors and artists.

“We are thrilled that the Steel Yard can contribute a permanent and lasting addition to Kennedy Plaza. It will stand for a long time in recognition of this point in Providence’s development and it inclusive and celebrated arts and culture climate,” said Howie Sneider, public projects director for the Steel Yard, in a statement.

The Steel Yard is a Providence-based nonprofit working on a creative revitalization of Rhode Island’s communities and creating an environment of experimentation.
