Steel Yard to train teens

The Steel Yard is holding its eight annual Camp Metalhead this month to train 10 teenagers in the industrial arts.
Hands-on training this year will enable campers to complete projects that demonstrate their skills in cutting, welding, forming and forging steel. They will also collaborate on a community project for public installation at the Roger Williams National Memorial and take tours of cultural and manufacturing sites.
The Roger Williams National Memorial sponsors the camp. Bank Rhode Island provides three full scholarships while in-kind support is provided by Mid-City Steel, Seven Stars Bakery and CVS.
The Steel Yard is an historic fabrication shop used today as a classroom for the industrial arts. It is located on the National Historic Register site of Providence Steel and Iron in Providence’s industrial valley.
Camp Metalhead has served more than 80 youth to date, said Howie Sneider, executive director. Some former campers work today in metalworking and in education, returning to the Steel Yard to teach metalworking classes and pass on their knowledge.
