Student entrepreneurs to witness innovation in action

PROVIDENCE – Forty aspiring student entrepreneurs from 11 of the state’s colleges and universities are riding on the Founders League Startup Bus Friday afternoon to witness entrepreneurial activity in action at local businesses.
The students will visit ShapeUp Inc., Swipely and the Business Innovation Factory.
“During each visit, the students will enjoy a whirlwind tour, a chance to talk to company leadership and an opportunity to ask questions about internships and jobs,” according to information from the Founders League.
Students will be joined on the bus by mentor volunteers, who will answer questions, share information and discuss their experiences with startup businesses. Mentors may also help students decide whether they should focus on starting a business or taking a job at a company, according to Founders League Director Melissa Withers.
The Blackstone Charitable Foundation funded the Startup Bus.
“Sometimes seeing really is believing,” Withers said in a statement. “All the advice in the world can’t substitute for seeing a company in action. Sometimes it’s not as glamorous as a student thinks. Other times, it surpasses their wildest imagination. Either way, it creates a toehold in reality that students can use to take their entrepreneurial ambitions to the next level. It’s a window into the world that just can’t get sitting in a classroom.”
