Students invited to apply for computing award

PROVIDENCE – The National Center for Women & Information Technology and its Rhode Island affiliates, Roger Williams University and Tech Collective, said applications are being accepted for the 2014 NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing, which honors young women at the high-school level for their computing-related achievements and interests.
Awardees are selected for outstanding capacity and interest in computing and technology, proven leadership ability, academic history and plans for post-secondary education.
“Since introducing this program, eight truly talented young Rhode Island women have been recognized for their achievements and have been offered the encouragement and support to further pursue their computing and technology interests,” JoAnn Johnson, manager of youth and education programs at Tech Collective and co-chair of the NCWIT RI affiliate, said in a statement. “We are very much looking forward to this year as we continue to promote careers in computer science, dispel gender stereotypes and provide lasting opportunities to Rhode Island students.”
This is part of the NCWIT Aspirations in Computing program, a nationwide talent development initiative designed to increase female participation in technology by providing structured, long-term engagement and support from middle school through the workforce.
Awards are offered at both national and local competition levels. The Rhode Island NCWIT affiliate was formed three years ago, and this is the third year awards have been made available at the local award level in Rhode Island.
Young women attending Rhode Island high schools and career and tech centers can apply for the NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing online through Nov. 2 at www.aspirations.org.
