Study: R.I. in middle of the pack when it comes to divorce costs

PROVIDENCE – Personal finance website GOBankingRates.com recently did the math and discovered just how much it would cost for a married couple in each state and the District of Columbia to get a divorce.
The criteria looked at by the website to create the rankings examined the average court fees and hourly lawyer costs plus the minimum processing time it takes once the divorce is filed in the state.
Rhode Island was in the middle of the pack, landing at spot 28 out of 51, with the court fee at approximately $140 and the hourly lawyer fee averaging $262.
The survey noted that while both the lawyer rate and court fees were lower than the national average, Rhode Island dropped in ranks due to its high minimum processing time. The survey found that in Rhode Island, processing can take up to 510 days to complete.
The state with the most expensive divorce costs was California, which had an average hourly lawyer fee of $402 and court filing fees at $435.

Wyoming can pride itself on being the state with the most affordable divorce budget. The hourly fee for a lawyer is around $187 according to the data and couples pay a mere $70 to file their divorce with the court; a cost that is around six times lower than the California court fee.
