BOSTON – Brookline Bancorp Inc., parent company of Bank Rhode Island, appointed Carl M. Carlson chief financial officer and treasurer effective April 1, according to an announcement from the bank.

Carlson succeeds former CFO Julie A. Gerschick, who resigned Dec. 31.

Carlson had previously been Webster Financial Corporation’s deputy chief financial officer since 2011. Prior to that, he held positions at Webster as senior vice president and director of finance and senior vice president for strategic planning and corporate development. From 1986 to 2007, Carlson was an officer at North Fork Bancorporation.

“Mr. Carlson’s breadth of experience in the financial services industry will serve our company well as we continue to build on our solid foundation and leverage the benefits of the transitional work that we have done over the past couple of years,” said Brookline Bancorp President and CEO Paul A. Perrault.

Carlson has a bachelor’s degree in finance from Clarkson University and a master’s degree in business administration from Dowling College.
