Supreme Court disbars R.I. attorney for scheme

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Supreme Court has disbarred an attorney for her role in a kickback scheme that cost the U.S. Navy approximately $18 million, The Associated Press reported last week.
The court announced that it was revoking Mary O’Rourke’s ability to practice law. According to the AP, O’Rourke pleaded guilty in May to theft of government property. She is a former employee of the now-defunct Navy contractor Advanced Solutions for Tomorrow.
Prosecutors said O’Rourke’s boyfriend, a former Naval employee named Ralph Mariano, steered contracts to the company in exchange for kickbacks.
Prosecutors have said O’Rourke was a minor participant in the scheme. Her sentencing is scheduled for September, the AP said. •
