Survey: Online, mobile banking customers continue to grow

WASHINGTON – The number of customers using online and mobile banking continues to grow, as branch banking continues to become less popular.
That’s according to the 2015 Federal Deposits Insurance Corp. National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked Householders, a biennial survey released last month. The results include trends related to how customers access accounts, which the federal agency says is useful when trying to understand customers.
“Knowing how households access their bank accounts can help inform discussions about how best to serve different groups of consumers,” according to the report.
When asked which ways customers access their bank accounts during the year, 31.9 percent of respondents said they used mobile, marking an 8.7-percentage point increase compared with the last time the survey was done in 2013.
At the same time, 75.5 percent of respondents said they used bank tellers, representing a 3.3 percentage point reduction compared with the previous survey.
“The growth in mobile banking was particularly striking,” according to the report.
When asked what primary method customers use to access bank accounts during the year, respondents said online banking was the most popular at 36.9 percent, representing a 4 percentage point increase compared with 2013.
At the same time, mobile banking also grew from 5.7 percent to 9.5 percent, while bank tellers fell from 32.2 percent to 28.2 percent.
