PROVIDENCE – If you’re from Rhode Island and want to use an emoji to get a message across, chances are you’ll use a woman’s sandal, bouquet of flowers, flame, hole-in-one or bomb over stars and pets.
Rhode Island emoji users also are fans of clothing and hand gestures, according to SwiftKey. And, ants and computer screens are popular in the Ocean State.
SwiftKey, which released its U.S. Emoji Report this week, said that 74 percent of Americans use an emoji every single day, and that nearly half of Instagram comments use an emoji. SwiftKey analyzed more than 1 billion emoji from SwiftKey cloud data to learn how people use emoji in each state.
“If you were to go by media coverage, you might think we’ve stopped using traditional language altogether and replaced it with one characterized by tiny yellow doodles, smiling poo and LOTS of trains,” said SwiftKey, which offers keyboard apps and builds technology to make it easier for people to create and communicate on mobile devices.
SwiftKey even created a U.S. map showing the most popular emoji in each state. To figure the top emoji in each state, the list of symbols used the most was cross-referenced with the list of emoji used more than the average in each state.
Here’s some highlights: Connecticut uses the koala more than any other state, Maine ranks highest for volcanoes and New York, unsurprisingly, has the Statue of Liberty as its top emoji.
