PROVIDENCE – Local startup Swipely, which functions as a universal rewards program through your credit card, has expanded into Boston.

Swipely first launched its program in February with 75 merchants in Providence, allowing consumers to get cash back and accrue points with every swipe of their credit card at participating locations.

It rolled out in Boston with about 150 participating merchants in the area – about 60 percent of which are independently-owned small businesses, the Boston Business Journal reported.

After raising $8.5 million in venture capital from Greylock, Index Ventures and First Round Capital, the company plans to expand in San Francisco and New York.

The BBJ noted that Swipely is a competitor to Cambridge-based SCVNGR's Level Up, which allows users to pay for their transactions with a QR code on their phone which is linked to their credit card.

LevelUp has about 250 participating merchants in Boston and about 1,000 in its four-city reach, which includes Philadelphia, New York and San Francisco. It as raised about $20 million in venture capital.

Swipely told PBN in September it had 20,000 registered users in the Providence market and had expanded its merchant list to about 100 at more than 500 locations statewide.
