PROVIDENCE - As many as 500 TD Bank customers in Rhode Island and 73,000 in Massachusetts could be affected by the loss of two data backup tapes that contained personal information such as Social Security numbers and driverâs license numbers. Names, addresses, dates of birth and account numbers might also be included.
Roughly 267,000 TD Bank customers across the country could be impacted, according to TD Bank Spokesperson Rebecca Acevedo.
The tapes, which were unencrypted, were lost more than six months ago, but TD Bank did not alert attorneys general in affected states until last week. The loss impacts at least six states
âWe confirm that some data tapes have been misplaced. We have no evidence that the data on these tapes is being used for any inappropriate purpose,â Acevedo said. âThis is an isolated incident that is being internally investigated and has been reported to law enforcement. TD takes customer privacy very seriously and we have policies and procedures in place to ensure appropriate handling of private customer information.â
âWe understand this is a difficult situation for our customers and apologize for the inconvenience. Customers whose data was on the tapes received a personal letter addressing the situation and will be offered credit monitoring and identity theft protection,â added Acevedo. âWe have no evidence that the data on these tapes is being used for any inappropriate purpose. We continue to vigilantly monitor our customer accounts.â
TD Bank said the lost tapes were shipped to one of its locations in late March but did not say how the tapes were lost. TD Bank, a unit of Toronto-Dominion Bank in Canada, operates in 15 states on the East Coast and the District of Columbia.
