WARWICK – Passenger traffic at T.F. Green Airport fell 6.2 percent in March compared with the same period last year, dropping from 335,578 total passengers in March 2013 to 314,784 last month, according to numbers released Tuesday by the R.I. Airport Corporation.

The airport’s year-to-date passenger traffic also saw a decline over 2013. T.F. Green’s 786,966 passengers in the first three months of 2014 constituted a 5.97 percent drop from the 2013 figure of 836,923.

The March figure represented the third consecutive month of year-over-year declines in total passengers at T.F. Green. In January and February, the R.I. Airport Corporation cited lower passenger demand after the busy holiday season and inclement weather in explaining the declines.

A spokesperson for the R.I. Airport Corporation did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the latest passenger numbers.

In addition to the decline in passenger traffic, T.F. Green also saw a year-over-year decrease in total cargo enplaned and deplaned. In February, the airport transported roughly 2.05 million pounds of cargo, a drop of 4.6 percent compared with 2.15 million pounds in February 2013. Year-to-date cargo tonnage, however, increased 2.36 percent in the first three months of 2014 compared with the same period last year.

The five airlines with the greatest share of T.F. Green’s passenger traffic in February were Southwest Airlines, at 49.5 percent; US Airways, at 24.7 percent; Delta airlines, at 10.6 percent; and JetBlue Airways and United Airlines, each with 7.4 percent.

Among them, Delta and US Airways were the only major airlines to register a year-over-year increase in passengers in February. Delta grew 4.51 percent to 22,737 total passengers, while US Airways rose 3.98 percent to 42,485 passengers. Southwest dropped 10.86 percent, while JetBlue fell 8.23 percent.

United Airlines transported zero passengers last month, compared with 4,619 passengers in March 2013. Airport representatives did not immediately respond to requests for further information regarding United’s presence at T.F. Green.

Since January, 12,391 aircraft have departed from or landed at T.F. Green Airport.

  1. the question of passenger traffic is no longer the economy, it is lack of seats and flights. There was but one flight to O’hare on United in January and February, 10 years ago there were 9 flights on two airlines. BOS keeps reaching record numbers at PVD’s expense because of continued new service there. BDL also has been increasing of late at a rate of nearly 10% monthly with new n/s to LAX, additional ATL service on Air Tran(sister to SW). There are now 10 ATL flights from BDL on two airlines, 3 from PVD. Without an increase in service PVD will continue to diminish.SW has reduced service from a high of 34 flights to 17 now. There is no n/s service west of Chicago on SW where there had been n/s to Kansas City, Denver, Las Vegas or Phoenix. Basically, the airlines want the Providence Metro area
flyer to travel to BOS for service.
