T.F. Green passenger traffic drops again in September

WARWICK – Passenger traffic declined in September at T.F. Green Airport, registering 297,077 travelers, a drop of nearly 6 percent compared with 315,248 in September 2013, according to the latest report released by the R.I. Airport Corporation.

Year-to-date, T.F. Green is reporting a 6.24 percent drop in passengers that have either enplaned or deplaned there – 2.69 million passengers compared with 2.86 million passengers last year during the same period.
The numbers represent the ninth consecutive month of year-over-year passenger declines at the airport.
Cargo traffic continued to grow, however.
September cargo traffic was 2.35 million lbs., an increase of 1.67 percent from September 2013’s 2.3 million lbs. Year-to-date, total cargo was 19.6 million lbs., an increase of 3.62 percent compared with 18.9 million lbs. during the first nine months of 2013.
Among the major carriers, United Airlines had the greatest increase in passengers for the first nine months of the year, at 32.36 percent and 72,871 passengers, compared with 55,056 during the same period last year.
Next was Delta Airlines at 28.73 percent with 254,345 passengers compared with 197,578 passengers during the prior period.
Southwest registered the largest drop at 9 percent, to 1,228,958 passengers from 1,350,628. US Airways registered a decline of 7.02 percent, to 311,185 from 334,686. And JetBlue Airways had a 4.2 percent drop, to 197,011 from 205,686 passengers.

With 126,262 passengers in September, Southwest had the largest market share at 42.5 percent, compared with US Airways at 24.7 percent; Delta at 14.3 percent; United Airlines at 10.4 percent; and JetBlue at 6.7 percent.
The largest cargo carrier in September again was Federal Express with 1,198,901 lbs. of mail and freight moved to and from Rhode Island. United Parcel Service registered 852,845 lbs. of cargo. Coming in at a distant third was Wiggins Airways with 153,377 lbs.
