WARWICK – Travelers flying out of T.F. Green Airport now have the option to enroll directly in a Transportation Security Administration program designed to expedite the security screening process for eligible passengers.

Previously, the PreCheck program was available only to select frequent fliers of participating airlines and members of U.S. Customs and Border Protection Trusted Traveler programs. Now travelers can enroll directly in PreCheck by applying at www.TSA.gov and complete their enrollment at the local application center in Warwick.

The center, located behind Automated Business Solutions at 405 Kilvert St., is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 4 p.m. After filling out the online application and providing biographical information, travelers will undergo a background check and have their fingerprints taken at the center.

One approved, PreCheck members pay an application fee of $85 for a five-year membership. TSA PreCheck travelers use dedicated lanes at participating airports for expedited screening, and are permitted to leave on shoes, light outerwear and belts, as well as leave laptops and compliant liquids in carry-on bags.

However, the TSA said, no individual is guaranteed expedited screening, as the agency will continue to incorporate “random and unpredictable” security measures throughout the airport.

“This new application process will greatly increase the availability of TSA PreCheck benefits to a broader population of travelers nationwide,” said TSA Administrator John S. Pistole in a statement. “TSA PreCheck is enabling us to move away from a one-size-fits-all approach to transportation security, as we look for more opportunities to provide the most effective security in the most efficient way.”

T.F. Green is one of 100 airports in the U.S. that have been selected to join the PreCheck program. Passengers at Logan International Airport, also a PreCheck participant, can apply for PreCheck at centers in Dorchester, Waltham and Bourne, Mass.

Since its introduction in 2011, more than 30 million passengers have used TSA PreCheck nationwide, and the TSA is currently working toward expanding to more than 300 PreCheck application centers across the country.

The Warwick center, which opened in January, is the only center in Rhode Island.
