WARWICK – A runway extension was approved last week by the R.I. Airport Corporation board.
Interim CEO Peter Frazier said there were three bidders for the project, and Cardi Corp. was chosen for its low bid of $37,876,958. Frazier said construction starts next month, and it is expected to be completed in December 2017.
“We don’t expect service disruptions. We will work late at night,” Frazier said.
He said the runway will be expanded to 8,700 feet from 7,166 feet, and it will help the airport maximize routes and improve West Coast service, removing weight restrictions for takeoff.
“It’s another tool in our belt to try and attract additional service,” Frazier said.
The other bidders for the project were Manafort Brothers Inc. ($38.5 million) and J.H. Lynch & Sons ($41.7 million).
