T.F. Green turns over ballfields to Warwick

WARWICK – The R.I. Airport Corporation has turned over the relocated Winslow Park ballfields to the city of Warwick, a relocation required by the extension of the primary runway at T.F. Green Airport.
The recreational ballfields were moved and improved in a project that included installation of four regulation softball fields, two practice softball fields, three soccer fields, walking trails and a new concession stand. The project also includes a play area for smaller children to replace one demolished by the relocation of Main Avenue, according to a news release.
The new park is accessed at 300 Airport Road.
The project contractor was J.H. Lynch & Sons Inc., one of eight who submitted bids. Construction began in June 2014 and was completed in August. Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian signed a lease agreement Friday that transferred control of the site to Warwick.
The runway expansion has Federal Aviation Administration approval and will extend the length of Runway 5-23 by 1,530 feet to the south, allowing for larger, heavier aircraft. The FAA covered 90 percent of the costs of the Winslow Park project, according to a news release.
