Taco foundation gives to Project GOAL

Posted 6/8/12

Central Falls-based youth soccer organization, Project GOAL, will receive three $7,500 grants from the Taco/White Family Foundation.

The foundation recently announced that it will award the grants annually throughout the next three years.

Project GOAL, which stands for Greater Opportunity for Athletes to Learn, focuses on middle-school students, boosting academics by combining after-school tutoring with soccer training and competition. Students work with educators after school, twice a week, to improve their study skills. After, they receive soccer training from accredited coaches.

The program will use the Taco/White grants primarily to fund transportation costs, one of its biggest expenses. Project GOAL regularly buses students to area soccer fields and other schools for tutoring sessions.

“Project GOAL provides proof that combining academic support with the reward of athletics through soccer, young students can succeed,” said Nelson Rego, Taco’s vice president of quality control and a foundation board member. “It’s such a positive thing to see happen,”
