Tanyard Brook project breaks ground

BRISTOL – The Tanyard Brook culvert project officially broke ground Monday at the Wood Street project site.

According to the project narrative, the current channel from Garfield Street to the outfall at Walker’s Cove, which spans approximately 1,535 feet, will be replaced with a new concrete box culvert.

Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse worked to help secure nearly $4 million in federal funding after the March 2010 flood.

“This is a smart investment in keeping the entire town safe and encouraging economic growth and development,” Reed said in prepared remarks.

“We saw again in 2010 there was a real need to address this situation, I’m glad to serve on the Appropriations Committee so I can make the case to help protect residents and businesses from long-time flooding problems,” he added.

The project is funded by $2.9 million from the U.S. Economic Development Administration and a $1.1 million Community Development Block Grant.

Construction will take an estimated 15 months to complete.
