Taunton taxpayers may sue over Wampanoag casino plans

TAUNTON – A group of Taunton taxpayers opposing the Mashpee Wampanoag’s proposed $500 million casino and hotel complex has retained an attorney and is considering taking legal action to prevent the casino from being built, according to the Herald News.

Lesley Rich – the lawyer representing the Taunton taxpayers – contends that selling the land to the Wampanoag for casino development would violate the established land-use restrictions for the area.

The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe has an option to purchase 146 acres in the Liberty and Union Industrial Park.

The city’s attorney is calling the taxpayer challenge “baseless,” according to the news source.
