Taveras, Fung to host 7 more job fairs this year

Posted:

PROVIDENCE – In a partnership with Workforce Solutions of Providence/Cranston, Mayors Allan W. Fung and Angel Taveras have announced a series of at least seven job fairs to be held at Roger Williams Park Casino.

The events are free to the public, but due to limited space, residents are encouraged to register early at www.providenceri.com/wspc/job-fair-registration.

The first fair hosted healthcare providers including Lifespan Corp. and Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island on Feb. 13 and drew nearly 300 candidates to the casino.

“I’m very pleased that our first jobs fair was successful and well-attended. Putting residents back to work and growing our local economy is a top priority for me as Mayor, and the Workforce Solutions of Providence and Cranston job fairs are one simple but effective way of doing that,” Taveras told the Providence Business News.

“It was packed and really busy. From what some of the business [reps] were saying, there were some really strong candidates,” said Ann S. Gooding, communications director of Providence’s Economic Development Department.

Upcoming fairs, open from noon to 3 p.m., will host firms in construction (April 17), hospitality and tourism (May 15), education (June 11), IT, insurance and finance (Aug. 14), manufacturing (Sept. 4), retail (Sept. 18) and banking and accounting (Nov. 13). The Providence Economic Development Department said that it is anticipating hosting additional fairs for a wider array of industries.

The construction sector fair on April 17 includes but is not limited to structural specialties, and seeks professionals in plumbing, HVAC, industrial businesses, green companies, architecture and roofing. There are also overlapping industry opportunities within each sector for those with non-specific skill sets, including administrative positions, IT and finance.
