Taveras taps Flores-Marzán as urban development director


PROVIDENCE - Rubén Flores-Marzán, the former president of the planning board of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, has been named Providence’s planning and urban development director by Mayor Angel Taveras.

Flores-Marzán will take up work full-time starting Feb. 11 as director of the city’s 25-person planning department, the mayor’s office announced Thrusday. Flores-Marzán was the former planning director for Puerto Rico.

City officials said that they brought in Flores-Marzán due to his ability to leverage city assets with international markets, as well as his experience in truck-and-rail carrier transportation systems.

“And his experience in multimodal transportation, serving millions of people, will inform our work with the Port of Providence, our highways and our rail service,” James Bennett, Providence’s director of economic development, in prepared remarks.

As the planning director, Flores-Marzán will work to fulfill the mayor’s agenda in making Providence “a livable, sustainable city that encourages economic growth and community development.”

“Mr. Flores-Marzán brings an impressive portfolio of large-scale planning and development projects with him to Providence,” Taveras said in prepared in remarks. “I am confident he will serve a vital role in making Providence a better place to live and work.”

As head of planning for Puerto Rico, Flores-Marzán managed green energy projects worth $350 million in 2011, while also processing development applications that are expected to create more than 35,000 jobs.

“I am thrilled to join Mayor Taveras’ administration and look forward to working with Team Providence in achieving our shared aspirations for a more creative, inclusive, prosperous and sustainable city,” said Flores-Marzán in prepared remarks.

According to Flores-Marzán’s resume, he also served as senior land planner for CPH Engineers Inc. out of Sanford, Fla. and is fluent in both English and Spanish.
