WASHINGTON – Rhode Island has the sixth highest taxes and fees for wireless service, according to the Tax Foundation, which released a map on Monday depicting taxes and fees for all 50 states.

At 14.68 percent, Rhode Island’s state and local taxes and fees on wireless service were well into the top 10.

Comparatively, Nebraska had the highest taxes and fees in the U.S. at 18.67 percent. Nebraska was followed by Washington state at 18.62 percent and New York at 17.85 percent

At the other end of the spectrum, state and local taxes and fees were lowest in Oregon at 1.85 percent, Idaho at 2.28 percent and Nevada at 2.13 percent.

Among the New England states, Rhode Island’s taxes and fees were by far the highest. New Hampshire ranked No. 31 national at 8.21 percent, followed by Vermont at No. 32 at 8.1 percent, Massachusetts at No. 35 at 7.85 percent, Connecticut at No. 40 at 7.41 percent and Maine at No. 41 at 7.21 percent.

These rates do not include the additional federal rate of 5.92 percent, which brings Rhode Island’s rate to 20.6 percent.

The average combined federal, state, and local rate is 17.18 percent.

The Tax Foundation based their report on an October 2012 report from Scott Mackey called “Wireless Taxes and Fees Continue Growth Trend” in State Tax Notes.
