PROVIDENCE – The Teaching Studio, the professional-development consulting group of The Learning Community, is partnering with five Rhode Island public schools for an initiative to improve reading achievement.

The Globe Park Elementary School, the Harris Elementary School, the Leo Savoie Elementary School and the Governor Aram J. Pothier Elementary School, all in Woonsocket, and the Old County Road School in Smithfield, will receive training and $20,000 each in materials over three years to, among other things, help with lesson plans, maximize instruction time and assess improvement.

Six other elementary schools in Woonsocket and Smithfield also will have access to materials to support district-wide teaching strategy improvement in two communities.

The partnerships are funded by a $1.8 million investment from The Rhode Island Foundation and the Kellogg Foundation.

“It is critical that we put the voices of teachers in the center of school-improvement efforts,” said Christine Alves, director of the Teaching Studio, in a statement. Alves helped build the initiative model that was previously used in Central Falls. This arm of the initiative will, in its first year, engage a total of 343 teachers and educators. •
