Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing clinched first place Monday, crossing the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 finish line first in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Team Alvimedica, led by American skipper Charlie Enright of Bristol is tied with Spanish sailors MAPFRE for fourth place. The position will be determined Saturday with an in-port race. Team Alvimedica won its first leg in the Volvo on the final day of offshore competition Monday in Gothenburg.
“We were the rookies in this campaign and to be able to win like this on the final leg, this is really a special moment,” said Mark Towill of Kaneohe, Hawaii, one of Team Alvimedica’s leaders along with Enright.
Abu Dhabi finished fifth in Leg 9 but that didn’t matter since the team had a comfortable lead when departing from France. Skipper Ian Walker, a two-time Olympic silver medalist for Great Britain, has run three consecutive Volvo campaigns. He becomes the first British skipper to win the overall Volvo Ocean Race title.
Team Brunel secured its runner-up finish with a second-place into Gothenburg. China’s Dongfeng Race Team, co-leaders midway through the race in March, placed third overall.
