Since 1974, the General Dynamics Electric Boat’s Quonset Point facility has been advancing the industry standard in the manufacturing, outfitting and modular construction to produce nuclear submarines for the U.S. Navy.
“Quonset Point has … developed a reputation as the crown jewel of the U.S. submarine industrial base,” said Dan Barrett, who handles Electric Boat’s public affairs.
The company aims to be a crown jewel of workplace wellness as well. Tied closely to the facility’s decades of tradition is Electric Boat’s evolving and expanding support for the health and safety of its 3,250 employees – a figure expected to grow by an additional 400 by year’s end.
“We’re honored to receive this recognition,” said Dr. Susan Andrews, Electric Boat Quonset Point’s medical director, of the Providence Business News Healthiest Employers award. “It validates Electric Boat’s complete commitment to maintaining and improving the health and safety of our employees.”
One of the categories in the company’s Employee Incentive Plan – Organizational Health and Safety – includes wellness and workplace safety goals.
Among the ways employees can meet these goals are to:
Obtain an annual physical from a care physician.
Participate in a smoking-cessation program.
Participate in an in-house health-screening event.
Fill a prescription at the Electric Boat Family Pharmacy.
Complete a weight-loss fitness challenge program.
Achieving these goals translates to financial payouts to all employees, engaging the workforce in habits that will benefit the company as a whole.
