PAWTUCKET – Teknor Apex Co. plans to expand in Pawtucket as part of a company-wide growth initiative.

Jonathan Fain, chairman and CEO of Teknor Apex at 505 Central Ave., said the company has not submitted formal plans yet to the city. Fain said more details will be released about this project in the coming months.

This is one of several expansion projects the company, which manufactures flexible and rigid vinyl, thermoplastic elastomers, nylons, specialty chemicals and garden hoses, is planning this year, Fain said Thursday.

Fain said Teknor Apex also is making a 100,000-square-foot addition to its facility in Leominster, Mass., which employs approximately 150. Fain expects to hire an additional 20 people as a result of that project at that plant.

Another project is planned in Brownsville, Tenn. Fain said a 200,000-square-foot distribution facility will be built in the Brownsville-Haywood County Industrial Park, allowing Teknor Apex to grow manufacturing units within its existing plant. Fain said that building should be operational by September, and represents a $32.2 million investment. Fifty jobs will be added as a result of that project.

The company also has a 1-million-square-foot facility already in Brownsville, for its nylon, vinyl, chemical and garden hose divisions.

Teknor Apex, founded in 1924, has approximately 750 employees in Tennessee, and 2,200 throughout the company, including 520 in Pawtucket. It has had a presence in Tennessee since 1971.

Fain said the company has benefited from “very favorable economic conditions for a company such as ours” – one that makes products for the automotive, medical and packaging industries.

Teknor Apex has 20 facilities around the world. Last year, it announced it bought Plastic-Technologie-Service, a German-based custom compounder of thermoplastic elastomers and engineering thermoplastics, for an undisclosed amount.
