Ten journalists land Metcalf fellowships

NARRAGANSETT – Ten journalists from around the world landed fellowships to the Metcalf Institute for Marine & Environmental Reporting’s 14th annual science workshop for journalists.

The journalists, from Rhode Island, Alabama, Georgia, Louisianna, Massachusetts and New York, as well as Poland and Singapore, will gain hands-on research experience through scientific field work in and around Narragansett Bay, lab exercises at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography and discussions with leading writers and scientists.

The work shop will introduce fellows “to the local, regional and global effects of climate change, water pollution and overfishing on coastal environments,” according to a release.

The 2012 Metcalf Fellows are:

• Michele Berger, associate editor for Audubon Magazine in New York City

• Mary Ann Bragg, reporter for the Cape Cod Times in Hyannis, Mass.

• Grace Chua, reporter for The Straits Times in Singapore

• Robert S. Eshelman, freelance reporter in Brooklyn, N.Y.

• Rosa Flores Dee, reporter for WDSU-TV in New Orleans

• Stephanie May Joyce, reporter for Unalaska Community Broadcasting in Unalaska, Alaska

• Elaine Lembo, deputy editor of Cruising World in Middletown

• Marta ?migrowska, host of the program Eco Reporter on the Polish national TV station in Warsaw

• Matt Smith, news editor for CNN in Atlanta

• Meera Subramanian, freelance reporter in West Barnstable, Mass.

“I’m thrilled to see the quality of reporting and the commitment to excellence that each of these journalists bring to the 14th Annual Science Workshops,” Sunshine Menezes, executive director of Metcalf Institute, said in prepared remarks.

“I’m certain the fellows will leave this workshop with a better understanding of the science behind global change and coastal ecosystems and with enhanced investigative skills that will significantly improve their reporting on the environment,” she added.

The Metcalf Institute for Marine & Environmental Reporting was established in 1997 and named for the late Michael P. Melcalf, publisher of The Providence Journal Bulletin from 1979 to 1987.
